Melitta Places its Confidence in Rhenus Expertise in Reorganizing its National Transportation Services
Melitta Household Products Europe, the largest division in the Melitta Group, is currently preparing the invitations to tender for its complete German distribution network. Rhenus Retail Service (RRS) is providing support for Melitta in every phase of the project - from the underlying concept to its realization.
The Rhenus Logistics Center in Minden has been handling the storage and warehouse logistics for coffee machines, filter papers, dust filter bags for vacuum cleaners and many other household products on behalf of Melitta Household Products Europe for years. Some 39,000 shipments leave the depot every year - involving small consignments, part and complete loads with a total volume of more than 25,500 tonnes. "The real challenge lies in providing an ideal distribution network across Germany with the right combination of shipping companies," explains Alexander Masch, Logistics Manager for Germany at Melitta Haushaltsprodukte GmbH & Co. KG.
So Melitta has secured the assistance of Rhenus for the current invitations to tender for the national distribution network. "Melitta and RRS have set up a joint team to look after the tender process until the scheme is implemented," explains Jens Thomas Schneider, Tender Manager at Rhenus. Melitta and RRS are attaching great importance to service quality, particularly adherence to deadlines, as they select carriers. The tender process will be tailored to achieve these aims; Rhenus Retail Services has even developed a special IT tool to evaluate the quotations. Computer-aided animations will make it much easier to make the final decision about awarding the contract.
"Inviting transport tenders on this scale is a highly complex business," says Alexander Masch. "That is why we are so glad to have the support of an experienced and neutral logistics company like RRS." The project provides Rhenus with an opportunity to input its comprehensive expertise during the concept phase in an advisory capacity. "During our planning work, we never forget that we will have to implement the concept at a later stage. That is why we provide feasible, reliable solutions," emphasizes Thomas Westphal, Logistics Consulting and Marketing Manager at Rhenus.
